Fall Foliage Adventures: Top Scenic Routes and Trails in Michiana | Cressy & Everett

Fall months turn Michiana into a stunning explosion of dramatic reds, oranges, yellows, and browns as leaves go through their annual color change. Our real estate agents share their favorite leaf-peeping routes and trails to enjoy by car or foot.

  • University of Notre Dame - Holy Cross Drive, Notre Dame, IN 46556
Not only is the University of Notre Dame one of the premier institutes of higher learning in the country, but its campus ranks among the top as well. Iconic landmarks such as the Golden Dome, "Touchdown Jesus," and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes take on a breathtaking splendor framed by fall colors. When you visit, don't miss the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art, which has 23 separate galleries and free admission to the public. Notre Dame is less than a 10-minute drive from South Bend homes for sale, making it perfect for spur-of-the-moment trips.

  • Potato Creek State Park - 25601 State Road 4, North Liberty, IN 46554
It's easy to see why Potato Creek State Park is one of the more frequently visited parks in the state. The centerpiece of the park is beautiful Lake Forster, an impressive 327 acres in size. Head out on the lake with a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard for stunning views of the fall colors surrounding you. If dry land is more your speed, there are six trails of varying degrees of difficulty through different habitats that offer bird-watching and wildlife-spotting opportunities. Park hours are 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. daily. Admission is $7 for in-state vehicles and $9 for out-of-state vehicles.

  • North Berrien County Tour
Rolling fields of vineyards are truly impressive during the autumn months. Two of southwest Michigan's acclaimed wineries are attractions along the North Berrien County Tour. Start off at Main Street downtown, not far from St. Joseph homes for sale, following Ship Street to the downtown Benton Harbor Arts District. Take a left turn at N. Benton Center Road and a right turn on Red Arrow Highway to reach Coloma and Watervliet. Take a break for a slushie or wine flight at Vineyard 2121 or a glass of rosé at dog-friendly Filkins Vineyards

  • Red Arrow Highway
Whether the day is moody or sunny, Lake Michigan always provides compelling views on a trip along the Red Arrow Highway. As part of the West Michigan Pike, built in the early 20th century as one of the nation's earliest "tourist roads," the Red Arrow Highway was named to honor the 32nd Infantry Division of WWII. The route hugs the Lake Michigan shoreline, passing through beach towns such as Union Pier and Lakeside. Noteworthy attractions include the Public Beach in New Buffalo, Dewey Cannon Trading Company & Bicycle Museum in Three Oaks, and Flagship Specialty Foods & Fish Market in Lakeside.

  • Rum Village Park - 2626 S. Gertrude St., South Bend, IN 46614
Spend quality time with Fido getting some fresh air and exercise at Rum Village Park. The whole family will enjoy exploring the park's 160 acres of rolling woodlands with three miles of trails. More than 100 species of birds have been spotted in the park, as well as foxes, reptiles, and other wildlife. Rum Village also features the city's second dog park, with separate areas for large dogs, small dogs, and socialization. Hours are 6 a.m. - 11 p.m. daily.
